- Catherine McAuley was born on September 29th 1778 at Stormanstown House, in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents were James and Elinor McAuley. Her family was very close and characterised by the family love and faithful happiness. She had a sister and brother.

- Catherine had an inheritance from an Irish Couple that she had helped for over twenty years and she used that money to build the House of Mercy, which opened in 1872.
