Storyboard Text

  • In Chapter 8 of Where the Broken Heart Still Beats, Naduah is making bread and reflecting back on her life. As a young girl, she was captured as a slave by the Comanche and after reuniting with her family her father chose a husband for her and her older sister, Crooked Leg.
  • It seems so long ago when father wanted me to take a husband.
  • I was not sure I was ready for the hardest work of my life. After watching my sister live in misery.
  • Why did my father pick an old mean man with 4 wives for me? Being a wife is terrible.
  • When Crooked Leg ran away with the young brave and came home to her husband, he cut the end of her nose off...I knew what kind of wife I wanted to be.
  • Rumor had it that the strong and wealthy Chief Peta Nocona wanted Naduah for his first wife. This made her sister, Crooked Leg, very jealous.
  • Naduah, your parents are in agreement with this arrangement. I have gifted the finest animals to your father.
  • I am ready to be your wife and prepare your food, make your clothes, and care for you.
  • Marrying Peta seems like a lifetime ago. So much has changed since then.
  • Twenty-four years later, Naduah is the wife of a chief and the mother of a young warrior. Naduah and her infant daughter, Topsannah, are recaptured and returned against their will to the white settlement. She lives her life working for a white family with thoughts of escaping constantly on her mind.
  • How can Topsannah learn her native culture when we are prisoners here, so far from home?
  • A plot to escape is always on Naduah's mind. Which way would she go? What would she eat when supplies diminished? She would ride in the direction of the sunset to find the People. Naduah would rather die out on the empty plains than die in captivity of the white settlement.
