Mr. Nuttle is sent off, with letters of referral from his sister, into the countryside to relax and relieve his nerves. His first stop is where Vera and her aunt live.
As vera lets Mr. Nuttel into her aunt's house,Vera learns that he doesn't know anyone in the town, even her aunt.
Once learning that; Vera weaves a mysterious tale of her aunt and her dead uncle and his hunting companions who died months ago. She tells Mr. Nuttlel that her aunt still thinks that they will return. She gives this as a reason for the open window.
Believing Vera's story, Mr. Nuttel feels sorry for Mrs. Sappleton who informs him that her husband and other relatives will be home soon. He feels sorry because he believes them to be dead.
Looking out the window, Mr Nuttel sees figures, just as Vera described, coming towards the house. He had presumed them dead and is frightened because he thinks that they are ghosts.
Fearing the 'ghosts' Mr. Nuttel Flees the house leaving Mrs. Sappleton to believe he was scared of the dog. Vera though, knows that she lied to Mr. Nuttle to have some fun.
