- Devon,England;1914. Ted Narracot buys a horse at an auction for thirty guineas. A price overpaid.
- Going...Going..Sold! To Ted Narracot for thirty guineas!
- The horse gets taken to its new home, where it forms it's first true bond. A friendship between a man and a horse.
- Woah! Woah! Easy boy! It's okay. I'm Albert. I'm going to call you Joey. We're going to get along just fine. Do you understand?
- But then, war breaks out. Ted Narracot sells Joey to the British Calvary in order to gain money to pay the rent. Albert tries to join Joey in the war but is denied because of his young age. Joey is now in the hands of Captain Nicholls.
- No. You can't. Please, Sir. He's my horse,sir. You can't take him.
- I'm sorry, son. your father already sold it. We need this horse for the war.
- While riding Joey, Captain Nicholls was shot and killed during an attack run. Joey and his new friend, Topthorn, is now captured by the Germans.
- With the help of some German soldiers, Joey and Topthorn escape. They find a farm, where they are greeted by a young girl named Emilie. She cares for them and loves them with the same love and affection that Albert gave. But then a cruel German captain came and took them away to pull heavy artillery for them.
- While with the Germans once again, Joey meets Private Hengleman. A kind man who cares for them. Topthorn dies from a heart failure and is unable to be treated. Upon seeing a tank, Joey runs from it and is wounded from the barbed wire.
