- The British knew that a lot of French supported the Americans (Napoleonic Wars) So between 1793 - 1812 British warships inspected American ships, and made them work for British warships (Impressment) This was legal if they were British deserters, on the other hand Americans protested and did not agree.

- Ohio Valley was given to the U.S in 1783, (Treaty of Paris.) and American settlers began to move in (large numbers) The First Nations did not like this as they were losing a lot of traditional areas. The First Nations also had treaties that were being disregarded, and asked the British to help them.
- The British (Great Lakes) were making assumptions about the First Nations, the Americans were also making assumptions about the British. Saying that they gave the First Nations weapons to attack American Settlers.
- American politicians (jinggoist) said things like, telling American troops to attack both Upper and lower Canada. Also saying that Americans would be allowed into Canada because the British did not like being under the Monarchy, and would prefer being freed.
- John C Calhoun and Henry Clay were men part of the Congress and were people who wanted to declare war with the British because of things like impressment. On June 1st , 1812 , James Madison (President) sent a letter to the Congress telling them to declare war.
