  • Meet the Cast (Equilibrium)
  • Meet Emma (Equilibrium)
  • don't forget your music submission form
  • New Kid at School (Disruption)
  • A split-scene opening to show the characters getting ready for school: The top-left closeup focuses on Mabel's lips as she does her makeup, the top-right focuses on Rick scrambling to look for clothes with a wide-shot of his room, the bottom-left focuses on Beth, ready to leave and looking slightly anxious through a wide-shot and the bottom-right focuses on Hunter with another wide-shot played over the non-diegetic chorus of "Neck of the Woods" by Maisie Peters, from the soundtrack.
  • Emma meets Beth (Further Disruption)
  • A close-up shot showing Emma's nervousness pans out into a wide shot of her house and her parents telling her to stay safe on her first day at a new school and: "Don't forget your music submission form". She sighs at them and walks away angrily while saying "I can take care of myself". There is no non-diegetic sound while the conversation occurs, but "Neck of the Woods" continues in Emma's earphones as she walks and the music abruptly stops when she reaches school and removes them.
  • The Audition (Realisation)
  • Emma arrives on her first day at school and an over-the-shoulder shot pans smoothly around to all of the characters. We see Mabel and Beth on the left in an argument, Rick and his jock friends to the right and then Ethan and Oli (two minor characters) talking on the far-right. This shows the overwhelming nature of a new school that Emma experiences.
  • Support from Lana (Realisation/Quest)
  • A medium-long shot also features a shot-reverse-shot of a conversation between Emma and Beth. Emma is lost and Beth introduces herself before helping her find the music audition room. As they walk (tracking shot) further disruption is introduced as Beth tells Emma that Mabel (her old best friend) was the last lead singer, but she was kicked out by the band and since then, she's been meaner than usual.
  • Long-shot to establish the music room setting as Emma prepares to sing her audition. She meets Hunter, the band's sound engineer who helps her set up the microphone. Diegetic music is played as Emma sings the chorus "Don't You Forget About Me" from the 1985 film The Breakfast Club, a coming-of-age story (intertextuality). This abruptly ends as the microphone is distorted and Mabel emerges, admitting to breaking it and threatening Emma by warning her to stay away from music.
  • The camera shot focuses in on Emma's phone and cuts to Emma's face in a shot-reverse-shot. In despair after her encounter with Mabel, Emma calls her sister Lana who's at University for support. Lana advises her to stick up for herself and continue her passion for singing (she's confident as opposed to Emma who is shy and scared).
