- Winston is let out of his cell and gets a job. (Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak dictionary).
- Winston sits at the Chestnut Tree Cafe. He watches the screen and plays chess alone.

- Winston writes 2 + 2 = 5 on the dusty table. He now accepts The Party and is finally on the party’s side.
- 2 + 2 = 5
- Winston and Julia meet at the park and he does not love her like he did before.
- I betrayed you
- They both say they betrayed each other and realize how getting caught changed them.
- I betrayed you
- Winston hears a song playing and cries as he thinks about happy memories about his family. Winston forces himself to believe that these memories are fake because the party told him to, even though he knows the memories are real.
