- Katie and Lynn's mom is a strict person. She doesn't let let her kids play because it's dangerous. The book says, "Our mother didn't like us to run or play or climb, because it was dangerous." The mom is also very delicate. Once she fell down a single stair and broke her leg.

- Uncle Katsuhisa doesn't think before his actions, is loud, and arrogant. He is the opposite of his brother, and he just makes noise for no reason. One time he was arrogant was when he said," I am the best Japanese chess player I know." After he lost, he was a sore loser, playing Lynn again and again so he would win, but he never did.
- Katie and Lynn's dad is calm, quiet, strong, and likes to think. He never liked to talk or be loud. Katie wrote that he was so strong that she pouched him in the stomach and he didn't even notice. Also he thought so much for so long that Katie wrote," Lynn said he thought so much that sometimes weeks or months passed before he made a desition."
- Katie is a girl who just started kindergarten and I would describe her as innocent. An example of this is the day before her first day of school. Lynn then told her how they were going to be treated. It said, "Some kids at school might not say hello to you.' 'You mean because they don't know me?' ' No, I mean because they don't want to know you' 'Why wouldn't they want to know me?" This shows how innocent she is because she doesn't know that much yet.
- Lynn is Katie's older sister and I would describe her as smart, responsible, independent, and a role model and good sister to Katie. An example of this is when Lynn says," From now on we are going to save our nickels to help Mom and Dad buy our first house. That way, instead of just wishing for a house, we're helping to really get one." This shows that Lynn is responsible and independent because she is already saving money for a house.
