- Camp is very tiring. It consists mostly of drills. People are getting sick, I write letters to family and don't receive any in return, and I feel so drained.
- African American soldiers for the Union don't get paid any and if we do, it's not as much as the white soldiers. Also, we are targets for the southerners. I feel that we are treated wrongly even after the Emancipation Proclamation.
- The Encomienda System was the Spanish colonies' system of using natives for forced labor. Work one included mining.
- Missionaries were people who traveled to foreign lands in hopes of spreading their religion. During the period 1491-1607, many European missionaries traveled to the Americas.

- Trade occurred between Native Americans and colonists. Things they commonly traded were information about how to group crops and fur.
- Smallpox brought by the European destroyed many native populations. In some cases, as many as 90% of natives passed away.
