Miss Patty Cake is Fern's doll. It was the last thing her mother gave her before she left. The doll is a symbol of comfort and the love Fern lacks from her mother. Miss Patty Cake also becomes a source of controversy and a symbol of America's white-centered society when one of the Black Panthers says Fern should have a doll that looks like her.
Delphine is the only sister responsible enough to own a watch. It is a symbol of Delphine's maturity, love, and care for her sisters. She makes sure they bathe and times them. She takes them out, with activities planned to the minute. At only 11, she carries responsibility beyond her years.
Hirohito's Go Kart symbolizes the love of his father. His father, Brother Woods, is a political prisoner. The ride Delphine takes down the "Glorious Hill" symbolizes the innocent joy of childhood that she has missed. She is the responsible and mature one and it is the first time we see Delphine have fun.
