- Bruno is dismayed when he finds the family maid, Maria, packing away his things.
- You don't mean we are leaving Berlin?What about School?And what about Karl and Daniel and Martin?
- Bruno looks to Mother for answers. She eventually confirms that not only is Bruno leaving, but the rest of the family as well. And she doesn't seem pleased.
- The banister...would the new house have as fine a banister as this one did?
- Mother explains that the reason for their impending departure lies with Father's job which she describes as important. But Bruno has little idea what his father does.

- He heard her speaking loudly to him until Father spoke louder than Mother could and that put a stop to their conversation.Then the door to the office closed and Bruno couldn't hear any more...
- Bruno's dismay deepens when he discovers that they are leaving Berlin and that he will have to leave his school and his friends behind.
- He would surely miss the house, where he had lived all of his nine years, It was a place he was familiar with and it was close to family - his grandparents.
- They were leaving for sure. And not even Mother could fight it. Bruno was resigned to his fate.
