- Around 360 million years ago, before dinosaurs existed and the earth was covered in swamps ...

- As they died organisms and tress fell to the bottom of these swamps and oceans where they decomposed. Over millions of years they were buried under layers upon layers of mud

- Heat and pressure turned the dead plants and animals into fossil fuel. The type of fossil fuel produced depends upon, organic matter, time, temperature and pressure.

- Coal is formed from ferns trees and plants and heat and pressure
- Rocks and dirt
- Oil is formed from small organisms like zooplankton and algae and heat and pressure.

- Natural gas is also formed from these more complex matter but has more heat and pressure so decomposes more.
