- The Continental Congress is still undecided, the majority of delegates still do not support independence. However a committee was appointed to draft a Declaration of Independence- Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson

- At first the national army was formed from state militias of untrained and undisciplined volunteers. However After Congress creates the Continental Army- men began to enlist for only 1 year.
- A series of smaller battles have been fought between the British and Americans, Americans have lost every single battle October 1777- Battle of Saratoga European nations decided to help Americans in its struggle for independence
- In 1777, France begins to give secret aid to the Americans France also convinces Spain to join and help the Americans Note: After the American victory at Saratoga, King Louis XVI of France recognizes U.S independence, and signs two treaties of alliance with the colonies.
