- Tecumseh is killed in the Battle of Thames (Lake Erie). Hopes of forming a confederation to fight the U.S. ended with his death, along with the Native American-British alliance.
- The British invaded Washington D.C. and set the Capitol as well as the President's mansion ablaze. Luckily, a thunderstorm put out the flames.
- As a result, the Americans recaptured Washington D.C. and defeated the British at Fort McHenry (1814).
- Star Spangled BannerO say can you see, by the dawn's early light,What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fightO'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,O say does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- As bombs burst over Fort McHenry (Sept. 13, 1814), Francis Scott Key watched in fear. The next morning, he was inspired when he saw the American flag flying over the fort, a symbol of victory for the U.S. As a result, he wrote "Star Spangled Banner", which was adopted as the national anthem in 1931.
