Storyboard Text

  • Hello, and welcome to the Great Pyramid of Giza.
  • A pyramid was constructed to house the body of a pharaoh. A pharaoh is a ruler of Egypt. This pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu, or Cheops. Pharaoh, or king, Khufu ruled Egypt during the Fourth Dynasty for 23 years from 2589 to 2566 B.C. He ordered workers to build the pyramid for him for his afterlife.
  • In a pyramid, there are a series of tunnels and chambers that are constructed. One chamber in particular, the burial chamber, contains Khufu's mummified body. Other chambers contain Khufu's possessions and pictures of his life.
  • The material needed to construct the pyramid was limestone. The Egyptians used limestone because it was abundant in Egypt. The tools needed to shape the limestone into blocks were pickaxes, chisels, and hammers. Using math, the blocks would be stacked to make a shape of a pyramid.
  • The limestone blocks were large and very heavy, so to move them Egyptians used large sledges. They would put the blocks onto the sledges to push or pull them. To reduce friction, they would put water underneath the sledges to increase the speed. Once at the construction site of the pyramid, they would use a system of ramps to haul up and stack the stones.
  • Since Egyptian pyramids are so big, you can say that it took a lot of workers and a lot of time to construct them. Also, workers were paid when building them with equal pay. It is estimated that it took about 6700 workers and about 20 years to construct Khufu's pyramid.
