- Daniel Ponce De Leon, long before the line drive that sent him to the hospital, was just another kid in Southern California. Growing up in La Mirada, attending La Mirada Highschool (2006-2010), 18 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. He was eventually drafted to the MLB by the Chicago Cubs 14th round, in 2013.
- May 9, 2017, while pitching against Victor Caritini of the Iowa Cubs, Caritini hits a line drive that struck Daniel Ponce De leon in the head
- Do you know what day it is ? Do you know where we are ?
- My head, My head !
- Where does it hurt ?
- He had emergency surgery and remained in the hospital for three weeks after the incident. He was cleared from all baseball activities in August.
- Instead of Departing for Memphis and the 15-plus-hour drive home immediately after the game, the team bus instead rerouted directly to the hospital, and it remained parked outside while Daniel's teammates and coaches waited for updates on his condition.
- What is going to happen to him ?
- He will be okay. Trust me guys.
- I hope he's okay.
- Like his dad taught him, (raised as a Christian) our lives our in God's hands. Those things are what he was grateful for, not only allowing him to survive but to become a better player/person
- God made us who we are, and we have to live with that,
- Yes Dad, i think your right.
- Daniel Ponce De Leon had dreams of playing in college and eventually in the MLB. Instead of taking the easy route, which he thought would be a short path to a professional ball player, turned out to be one of the most winding roads you could possibly take to a person's career. His Journey had just begun.
- The only way to go from here, is forward.
