- Today we are going to hear Jacob's presentation.

- Today is a sad day...The U.S. has began combat in the Vietnam War.
- March 9th. 1965
- The first U.S. troops have landed in China Beach.
- Oh no!
- I think my brother is in that group.
- To Fight Communism!
- That's why I'm joining the Army.
- Richard did you hear? The U.S. is joined in the Vietnam War yesterday.
- 3,500 soldiers were sent to help the Saigon Government fight Communism
- Yes, I heard the Marines landed north of Da Nang.
- President Lyndon Johnson must have decided it was time to join the conflict.
- I saw it coming, after Congress passed the Tonkin Resolution last year.
- It gave him power to take "all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the United States and prevent further agression.
- I know they North Vietnam and the Viet Cong had been fighting South Vietnam for many years.
- But their problems began in the 1800s during the French colonial period.
- It's time we kicked the communist out of there!
- I wish we did not have to fight but we are going to have to. Especially since we are both joining the Army after graduation.
- There protesting on college campuses, in front of government buildings, even boxer Muahmmad Ali is resisting the draft. I just don't understand.
- I don't understand why all the protest. Do they want communism to win?
- Boot Camp is hard. We just finished the first 8 weeks at Tiger Ridge Camp and today we arrived at North Fort Polk for the last eight weeks.
- This is where we are going to learn about booby traps, Charlie, and how to fight this war before we are sent to Vietnam.
- The Army has become like a family. Our division is always together, eating the same rations, and enduring the heat, humidity, bugs, and itches.
- We carry around more than 60lbs of gear, water, ammunition, and even more if you have to carry radio equipment or the machine guns.
- We know the meaning of leadership and we are always concerned about each others safety. We lost two men last week and it was like losing our brothers.
- I take care of wounded men every day. I have seen very young men die in front of me. I've seen the worst wounds I have ever expected to see: torn limbs, open skulls, blown torsos.
- I never expected the war to be like this. I thought we were fighting for freedom, I don't know what we are fighting for anymore.
- We were attacked today, November 17th, 1965 by the North Vietnamese Regiment near Plei Mei. We didn't get reinforcements and when the fight ended 60% of our men were dead.
- I made it out of the battle. I'm still here, I will keep fighting. I'm so tired but I won't give up.
- March 23rd,1973
- A coordinated attack of more than 100 sites in South Vietnam and the beginning of the end of American involvement in the Vietnam War.
- Tet Offensive, January 1968
- You're friend got badly hurt in Khe Sanh. We saved his life but he has a long recovery ahead of him.
- We're sending him back to America to recover, only time will tell.
- So what's going to happen to him now?
- I know Mom, I'm glad it's finally over. After 5 years of being back home I still don't feel like my self.
- Chris, the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, President Nixon declared the war is over.
- My body healed but I am sad all the time. Everything reminds me of the horrible experiences I had in Vietnam.
- The doctor's say you have PTSD and it might be a long time before you feel like yourself again.
- My friend Richard is back from the war and it helps to talk to him about everything that happend.
- I understand Chris, and I know you are doing your best. I just wish it was easier for you.
- But after more than 50,000 Americans killed or missing, and many more wounded, it's hard to make sense of it all.
- I'm glad that he returned safe and sound.
- After 47 years, Chris and Richard are still friends today. They don't talk about the war any more but they still remember.The End
