- This is the beginning of the story when luke is watching as the workers begin to cut down the forest, the thing that had kept him safe for his whole life.
- Rising action
- This is luke sitting in his isolated room in the attic, with nothing to do but read, eat, sleep, or look out the windows. since he is not allowed to live, he has nowhere to go.

- as luke looks out the window, thinking that life could not get much worse, he sees something in his neighbors house when he knows that all of the family is gone. It was a face. a child's face.
- Bewildered and shocked, luke devises a plan to go to the house and meet this third child. First, he waits to make sure everyone is gone besides the third child. Then, he will wait for his family to go to work and school. Finally, he will sneak out the back door and see the other illegal child in the neighborhood.
- As he snuck in through the deck door, he saw a girl typing away on a computer. when she turned her head and noticed him, she immediately got up and tackled him. as she did this, luke told her that he was a third child and she stopped. She introduced herself as jen and she began talking to him about a rally they were going to have at the presidents house. she said they would convince them to eliminate the population law so third children could live happy.
