  • Many believed the center of Eurasia, was the key to controlling the world. But it’s the coastal fringes, the Rimland where sea power and land power converge.
  • Look at the Rimland today: you have the South China Sea, Eastern Europe, and the Persian Gulf—all areas of tension and competition. To maintain peace, the world’s great powers must ensure no single nation controls these strategic regions.

  • As Bordonaro has rightly pointed out, we must now also consider the power of economic influence. Take, for example, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)—a clear attempt to gain control over strategic areas of the Rimland through economic means. The U.S. and its allies must respond not just with military alliances but with economic partnerships and infrastructure investments in these regions. This is still a balancing act, but the tools have evolved.

  • I wrote in a time of battleships and land armies. Today, we live in a world of globalized trade, interconnected economies, and instant communication. Yet, despite all these changes, my fundamental point holds true: geography still matters. You can see how the world's attention remains fixed on key regions of the Rimland. From Southeast Asia to the Middle East, these places are still the pivot points of global power.
