- Do you know how your body fights off viruses like Covid-19 and the flu?
- No! How?
- Viruses like Covid-19 and the flu enter our bodies through our respiratory system. That's why masks are used to slow the spread of the disease.Once the virus enters our body, our immune system initiates an attack.
- The mucous membrane in the nose, throat and lungs are among the first line of defense to protect the body.
- Once in the body, the virus will enter the cells and the immune system will mount it's attack!
- Detect!Deflect!Destroy!
- Macrophages are amongst the first to detect and fight the virus. When backup is needed, the Killer and Helper T-cells join the fight. Killer T-cells release Cytotoxins to kill the virus. The Helper T-cells call for the B-cells to finish the job. Then Memory B-cells will recall the Antigen and be able to mount an attack quicker the next time the body is exposed.
- Even though needles are scary, vaccines are a huge help to our immune system! It helps protect not only us from getting sick, but protects others as well.
- You're right. Anything that helps increase our body's ability to protect itself against an attack is awesome!
