Storyboard Text

  • The first part of the cell cycle is Interphase.
  • Interphase is where the cell spends most of it's life where it prepares for mitosis.
  • What? A test? What's going on, I was sleeping.
  • Now, mitosis is split into four main parts. Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase. Write these down guys, we're going to have a test on this topic in two weeks.
  • Karyll: I'll write the notes, and you can do the homework.
  • Eunice: Cool with me
  • Can you explain what happens in these phases.
  • Let's start with the first stage, Prophase. The nuclear membrane disappears and chromosomes become visible. Centrioles start to form fibers and move to opposite sides of animal cells.
  • Thats right Karyll.
  • So only animal cells have centrioles?
  • Metaphase...fibers from prophase...chromosomes...center of the cell
  • The next stage is metaphase. This is when the fibers from prophase attach to chromosomes helping them form a clear path in the center of the cell.
  • The next stage in the cell cycle is anaphase.
  • During anaphase, chromosomes are pulled from the center of the cell by fibers, and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
  • If something were to go wrong in the cell cycle, the cell would prevent cell division if the DNA is damaged, didn't get proper nutrients, and if DNA hasn't been replicated.
  • In telophase, each set of DNA splits off from the parent cell, to later become two daughter cells.
  • Mistakes can also happen in the cell cycle. Which include an abnormal nucleus, non-specialized cells, and many more.
  • The last step of the cell cycle is Cytokinesis. Cytokinesis is when the whole cell splits into two daughter cells from the parent cell.
