- In "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Violence Doesn't Solve problems. My first piece of evidence to support the theme "Violence Doesn't Solve Problems" is toward the start of the play (pages 75-77) when all the power went out and all the residents on Maple Street were accusing each other of being the "monster", (who they think is the cause of the power outage) for things that were out of their control. For example, Les Goodman's car started up by itself even though there was no power. This supports the theme by showing how even though he couldn't control his car starting by itself, people still blamed him for it when there was nothing he could do to have the car start itself, it just did. But they still accused him of being something that they don't even know if is real or not, they just thought that instead of trying to find out what was going on, they decided that accusing and blaming each other would answer their questions. My second piece of evidence is in the scene when everyone started vandalizing and breaking their own things because they were paranoid.(page 81-82) This scene supports the theme by showing how being paranoid can lead to violence, for example, some of the residents then suspected Steve to be the "monster" because he had a radio that they thought he used to communicate with the other monsters. This scene shows how people would accuse anyone and anything to find something out, even if its not a good way. The last and final piece of evidence is in the scene when the character Charlie, shot a dark figure with a shotgun, not even knowing what or who it was.(82-84) This supports the theme by showing how fast to took for Charlie to shoot that figure not even trying to figure out who or what is was. This shows how violence does not solve problems because shooting that figure who turned out to be Van Horn, was pointless because it didn't help them figure out what was going on and is surely didn't answer any of their questions. This concludes my reasons and evidence for how Violence Doesn't Solve Problems.
