  • Introduction
  • Our teens of today have many responsibilities. Katerina Tefft said it well. "The current age of 16 for sexual consent is a flawed policy. Raising the age would only serve to endanger the wellbeing of the nation’s youth. The state would do best to avoid such an unnecessary restriction of hard-won civil liberties. Teenagers today are appropriately trusted with a great deal of responsibility, most of which has the potential to affect those around them far more than the choices they make in their personal lives. (Tefft)
  • Consent: Consent is essentially giving permission for something to happen. In this case, it's talking about "skoodilypooping" (Concent)
  • Narration
  • Sexual assault victims face many difficulties. They face the trauma that came from it, and a lot of times they're scared to speak out. It doesn't and shouldn't be this way. There's many bad people in this world. With enough help, we can better this issue for the victims and the loved ones. (Consent)
  • Confirmation-Novel
  • "Got the year-old condom from health class" (Philippe 81)
  • This thinking by Norris caused him to not act like himself that day. He was still intelligent about it and was being a responsible teen
  • Keeping the age of consent at 16 is better for society
  • Confirmation-Research
  • Teen pregnancy occurs in only 750,000 girls yearly
  • Intimacy in young relationships is often limited to hugging, kissing, holding hands and the comfort of knowing that though you often feel at odds with your parents, your teachers and the world, there's somebody who likes you just as you are. Catherine says, "It's nice to have a boyfriend who's the same age and has the same sense of humour—we're pretty much exactly the same." But about a sexual relationship, she says, "We aren't even close to anything like that." Kaye)
  • Obviously, nothing is perfect. There's always going to be people that are unhappy. When it comes to consent, it's not the age that's the problem, it's the culture. The media doesn't put enough attention on the issue and movements like the MeToo have helped to get the word out.
  • Concession/Refutation
  • Some people believe that "Parents must not only discourage their children from engaging in sexual activity, they must demand it, and, like my parents, take steps to prevent it. (Williams)
  • Throughout the book, there's lots of romance. Norris kisses Maddie and Aarti. He's very sensible. He over-analyses lots of scenarios and he drinks but the dude knows what he's doing. He even says at one point "Gotta take advantage of a week without supervision, right? (Philippe 186)
  • Conclusion
  • America has come a long way since the Washington days. It's a place of freedom and prosperity for those who seek it. It's vital that we teach the future generations to be responsible we can continue what makes America great. (Kaye)
  • A Statistics Canada study published in August 2008 found that only 43 percent of teens aged 15 to 19 reported in 2005 that they'd had sexual intercourse at least once, a drop from 47 percent in 1996/97. Only eight percent reported having sex before age 15, down from the previous 12 percent. And the latest teen pregnancy figures show a steady drop over the past couple of decades, especially among girls aged 15 to 17, according to the latest figures from SIECCAN, the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada.
  • "By raising the age of consent, we would not be teaching teenagers how to make good decisions; rather, we would only be impairing their ability to learn these decision-making skills on their own initiative" (Gerdes). It's necessary for teens to embrace/learn how it is to be responsible so we can grow as a society.
  • We are responsible!
  • Teenagers today are appropriately trusted with a great deal of responsibility, most of which has the potential to affect those around them far more than the choices they make in their personal lives. It seems backwards that we as a society have more confidence in a 16-year-old’s ability to own and operate a vehicle, (a potentially deadly weapon,) than their ability to make responsible choices with regards to their own sexuality. (Gerdes)
  • "It's almost counter-intuitive, but it appears that the more kids know about sex, the less likely they are to actually have it. "Canadian society has become increasingly accepting of the reality of adolescent sexuality, which has made discussions much more open," (Kaye)
