- Laura is married to her childhood best friend Chris, a lovely man. Alice is the eldest daughter married to a man named Mark and has two beautiful children,Sally-Ann and Daniel- my lovely grandchildren.
- Hello,my name is Samantha and this is the story of me and my family. We live in Birmingham, in the same neighbourhood.

- I'm married to a former successful policeman Richard and have two beautiful daughters,Laura and Alice, who are grown up and married.
- The following day
- Everything seemed to be going well until last Christmas, when our family's deep secrets got out.Everyone was enjoying their Christmas dinner but Laura, who seemed absent-minded, tried to avoid eating and drinking. She pretended to be alright but we somehow managed to guess the reason for her sickness: it was her hidden pregnancy.
- She was hoping to keep her secret because a few years ago her husband Chris had learnt he was sterile. While everyone was thrilled to have received the "lovely news", to our horror, Chrisstood up and admitted being unable to have children.
- After the previous day, we all needed some time to recover from shock. At first Laura refused to come clean with Chris about her pregnancy, but eventally decided to risk telling him about her love affair with her sister's husband Mark. She was desperate and suggested going to therapy, but Chris lost his temper and threatened to kill Mark.
- Although Laura tried to stop him from hurting Mark, Chris couldn't stand being betrayed by his friend. Blinded by rage, he went to Mark's house and shot him with the gun he had received from his father-in-law.

- Richard witnessed the crime but promised to help Chris. Chris then denied having been involved in in the shooting as Richard agreed to provide an alibi for him.
