Storyboard Text

  • Rata was a young man who lived on a small island in The Pacific Ocean. The island was always being hit by storms and tornadoes that were destroying the village, so Rata decided to help his people.
  • AHHHH TORNADO
  • I could build a waka
  • Rata thought long and hard about how he could fix the problem, and his mind was set on building a waka to take his people to a new island.
  • Rata walked through the wood for days carrying his giant toki [axe] trying to find the perfect tree for the waka.
  • After a week of searching he finally found the perfect tree, a great big totara tree with a straight and long trunk.
  • As fast as he could he chopped the totara tree down. However, in his rush he forgot the rule of the forest. Always say a karaki if you chop a tree.
  • Rata was tired after the hard work so he decided to go and rest then come back to start carving the tree in the morning
  • Tane Mahuta, god of the forest was no happy with Rata so he sent his children to solve the problem.
  • Go stand the tree back up and every time he chops it down do the same thing every time.
  • The next day Rata came back and the tree was standing upright agian so he chopped it down again and went home
  • But the same seem happend and he was angry, so that night he hid behind a tree and saw.
  • The children of Tane Mahuta were standing the tree back up again cause he didn't say a karakia
  • Rata said sorry for not saying a karakia to Tane Mahuta and the next day the forest children made him a huge waka.
