- After the Civil War ended in 1865, the Reconstruction era began. Millions of slaves were freed, but their rights had to be ensured.

- Despite this, Reconstruction led to a state similar to slavery for African Americans.

- 1865-1866
- The Black Codes were a series of laws created to restrict the newly freed African American peoples' rights.
- No person of color can testify against a white person in court unless the white person agrees with it.
- Southern states created various laws to eliminate black voting.
- 1890-1906
- Poll taxes and literacy tests were among the most popular. The poll tax required all citizens to pay a fee to have the right to vote. These laws prevented African Americans from voting, targeting their financial inability to pay the fee, and their illiteracy.
