Storyboard Text
- I ran back to mine and Jimmie’s corner all broken down. And now there is someone. I know who it is just from the way he runs, with his hands straight and pumping in close against his body. I have my mouth open to call out to him. To call out to Eli. Because Eli doesn’t have scared. Eli can be outside for real.
- Eli is running towards the bushes. And even though he is too big to hide in them now, I can see he’s going to try anyway. He was running away from Beaver. Eli is scared, Beaver is chasing after him. Eli is scrabbling under those bushes now, trying to get away. Beaver has his black boots and his stick and helmet and shield.
- Come on. Come on Eli.
- Beaver pulls him out of the bush, his face all red glowing with the gate. Eli looks for something, that he won’t find. Someone else took it that thought that they were doing the right thing, but it turned out to be the wrong thing. Eli could’ve had the chance against Beaver. He could scare Beaver. But he can’t, so he doesn’t do anything.
- Beaver pulls him and keeps on hitting him. Eli doesn’t even move anymore or doesn’t even scream. Eli is very very stil and quiet. Later I tell myself that I was just about to help Eli, who I love as fierce as anyone. Harvey just popped straight out of my wish to save Eli. Harvey is panting hard and looks at Beaver slowly wiping the blood from his stick onto his pants.
- Harvey reaches Eli’s hand and feels his heart beating fast. He yells at Beaver and smoothes the hair on Eli’s head and rubs his hands over his body and shakes him saying “come on.” Harvey stands up, pulling Beaver away from Eli. Harvey starts to walk away, he is calling for help, for an ambulance. He calls for Beaver to follow.
- Then I see Eli’s hand move. Just a bit. Like he’s saying hi. Like he’s saying help. And Beaver see’s too. Harvey sees everything and calls to Beaver. Beaver is still watching Eli’s hand and then sees a rock. Rocks can be good for terrible things too. When Beaver picks up that rock, I tell my to shut and my ears to close, but they don’t listen. Beaver walks away. He walks straight past Harvey, rubbing at the spot where his eye used to be at. Harvey is frozen, looking at Eli. Then follows Beaver. Harvey walks away.
- I see the fire reach one of the gas bottles at the back of the kitchens
