Myrtle runs out to see what she thinks is Tom's car. She waves her hand to get the car's attention, wanting to be with Tom and not her terrible husband. However, it is not Tom but a distraught Daisy driving and she doesn't plan on stopping.
"That yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine, do you hear? I haven't seen it all afternoon."
Gatsby's car, long gone, leaves Myrtle lying on the street. Michaelis and the other driver going the opposite direction are the ones to find her and check on her. But it is too late, Myrtle had died almost instantly.
"The God damn coward! He didn't even stop his car.
Later on, when Tom, Nick, and Jordan drive pass, Tom wants to see what the commotion is all about. He sees Myrtle's body dead and confronts an officer. When he asks what happened, the officer says a car hit Myrtle and she was instantly killed.
"Was Daisy driving?"
"Yes. But of course I'll say I was.
Tom Buchanan sees George Wilson, who is nervous and shocked. Tom thinks George will tell the police that the car belongs to Tom. Tom tells him the car did not belong to him and he says that he was picking up the coupe.
Now having left the scene, Tom, Nick, and Jordan all drive home. Tom drives the car fast down the road and he begins to cry.
Nick goes home to see Gatsby hiding in the bushes, spying on Daisy and Tom. They start talking about the accident. Gatsby says he tried to take control of the wheel and it is there when Nick finds out the truth. Daisy is the one who ran over and killed Myrtle.
