  • The idea of Separation of Powers is separating the power of government into three branches. Each branch has specific powers that are not given to the other branches of government. An example of separation of powers is the President Vetoing laws, the Legislative branch making the laws, and the Judicial branch reviewing the laws.
  • Checks and Balances
  • Checks and balances is the idea that each branch can check and balance the other branches to make sure no one branch become too powerful enlightenment philosopher Montesquieu argued that to prevent one branch from overriding the others we should create checks for each branch an example of a check by the executive is the president can veto laws passed by congress congress can override a veto with 2/3 vote checks and balances is a way for the peoples rights to be protected by each branch
  • POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY
  • Popular Sovereignty is the idea that the people are the rulers of the government, meaning the government gets their powers from the people. When government officials are elected they are sent to represent the people. An example of popular sovereignty is when citizens vote for elected officials to hold government office.
  • REPUBLICANISM
  • Republican is the idea that a nation is governed under a Republic style of government. A republic style of government means a state is ruled by representatives from the people. Representatives are given their power and elected through voting and elections through representative government, the elected officials have the ability to promote the general welfare of the citizens.
  • LIMITED GOVERNMENT
  • Limited Government is best defined as a governing or controlling body whose power exists only within pre- defined limits that are established by a constitution or other source of authority The main idea behind Limited Government is the government should have certain restrictions in order to protect the individual rights and civil liberties of citizens An example of Limited Government in our society is the US government
  • Federalism is best defined as system of government in which entities such as states or provinces share power with a national government The main idea behind Federalism is: federalism is a system of government in which the same territory is controlled by two levels of government. An example of Federalism in our society is the best example for a country with a federalist political system is the united states
