- In a New York City in the not too distant future, where an alert service informs citizens of their last day. Mateo Torrez, 18, and Rufus Emeterio, 18, first connect on the final friend app, where they must live a lifetime in just 24 hours.
- THEY BOTH DIE AT THE ENDBY: ADAM SILVERA
- People are most afraid of receiving a call from the death cast informing them that their time is up and they have 24 hours left. Unfortunately, Mateo and Rufus receive a call too soon, and Mateo must learn to step beyond of his comfort zone while Rufus must learn to appreciate the little things in life. Self versus other.
- The Pluto's. Rufus' parents and sister died when he was young. He went to an orphanage where he met a group of people and they became friends and they got nicknamed the Pluto's because they don’t fit in. This is where Rufus has his goodbyes with his friends.
- Mateo and Rufus both decide to join up for the Last Friend app after receiving the call; this app allows users to meet up on their final day. Mateo first has no luck in locating a trustworthy buddy, but he eventually comes across Rufus.

- Mateo and Rufus then discuss the final friend. Rufus is instructed to meet Mateo at his residence. When he gets there, Mateo begins to pack but is hesitant to leave his apartment because it is his safe haven. Even though he doesn't believe Rufus to be who he claims to be, he eventually lets Rufus into his flat and calms down.
- What if he isn't really who he claims to be? What if the person at my door is just a random hippie?
- Towards the end of They Both Die At The End, Mateo and Rufus set out on final adventures together to live their end day to the very end together.
