- In the story a Toyota logo is present to represent Kambili's recognition of Father Amadi's car even only after seeing it twice. This brings hints that Kambili is holding feelings for him since she could recognize something she's only seen twice easily.
- Papa Nnukwu doesn't believe in Catholicism as he is more a traditionalist. Instead of praying to a god he wishes for his family. He wishes for his family to be blessed with luck as he knows his time is running out. The hand reaching out to the moon represents the idea that Papa Nnukwu is reaching towards an entity that will grant those wishes.
- As Papa Nnukwu passes away Aunty Ifeoma says to Kambili that he died smiling. Papa Nukwu smiling repesents that he's satisfied with the life he lived. He knows his children and grandchildren are his future. He knows that they will have a successful future. Thus, he passes with the knowledge that his offspring will be successful.
