  • The Crime Against Kansas
  • Who was involved in this event?
  • What key factors played a role in the event?
  • "Rape of a virgin territory"
  • Charles Sumner’s speech, “ The Crime Against Kansas” was so controversial that it ended in him being caned. He defended Kansas’s right to be a free state and offended the Senator of South Carolina, Mr.Butler and critiqued Butler's ideologies and moves.
  • Where and when was this event?
  • This speech was made in response to the Kansas - Nebraska Act involving the people of such territory. Charles Sumner, of course, was involved as he made the speech. Mr. Butler and South Carolina were the intended offense/audience.
  • Why is this event important?
  • Charles Sumner spoke on Kansas’s state status; if it were to become a slave state it would be a “rape of a virgin Territory". To get to this point, it offends Mr.Butler and S.C. Mr.Butler's proclaimed “goodness” is nothing since he supports slavery. Kansas comparison to SC is invalid because they are from different times.`
  • How does this connect to the Mexican-American War?
  • Kansas May 19, 1856
  •
  • A cycle of violence was proven; the speech and caning lead to Bleeding Kansas. This conflict pertaining to the status of states adds to the tension of the civil war. Sumner did a great job embodying his hate for slavery in this speech or what he would call “wickedness.”
  • Bleeding Kansas
  • The previous step was the Mexican-American War and coincidentally Sumner also spoke on this event with the same, anti-slavery, views. He believed in both situations that a new territory would become tainted if it were to become a slave state.
