- After seeing how the old lady would rather die than live without books, Montag knew he had to find out what was so special about these books. He steals a couple books from the old lady's house without anyone noticing, so he doesn't get caught.
- I need to take these books and hide them so the captain doesn't find out. There must be something to these books.
- Montag's boss, Captain Beatty, finds out that Montag contains books. He then takes him to his own house and commands him to burn it down. He also finds out about Montag's friend (Faber) and becomes determined to kill both Montag and his friend. Montag, with no other choice, takes his opportunity, kills Captain Beatty, and then runs away from the town.
- I know you have had books, you fool. I command you to burn your own house down. We will then kill you and your little friends for your crimes.
- NO! I can't let him hurt Faber or even kill me. I have to fight back and kill him.
- Montag finally makes it out of town and to safety. He is greeted by the "hobos," who are all intellects and previous professors. They have also read and even memorized books as a way to preserve knowledge in order to one day rebuild society. For the town, however, it gets completely destroyed by an atomic bomb, killing everyone that lived in it, including Montag's wife Mildred.
- Finally, I escaped the town. Who are you, guys?
- Hello Montag, I am Granger. We are the intellects. I know who you are because we were watching your chase. You're safe and sound here.
