- in October 1347, 12 ships arrived in Europe from the black sea, and docked at the Sicily port of Messina. Most of the sailors on the ship were dead, those who were still alive were covered in black boils oozing pus and blood and severely ill. the ships were ordered out of the harbor but little did we know this was just the beginning.
- The plague is spread through the infected bite of a flea or rat, as well as through the air. fleas and rats were found almost everywhere in the mid eval era, and were found commonly infesting homes and ships of every kind. This is the main reason that the plague had such a deadly impact.

- The biology of the plague was not understood so people that were religious believed that the plague was god punishing them for their sins. It was thought that the only way to get rid of the plague was to win forgiveness from god.
- Some people believed that to win forgiveness they had to purge and punish communities and others for their sins. Many jews were massacred 1348-1349.many were murdered and burned by christians who blamed them for the plague.many flew to eastern Europe to be safe from raging mobs in the city
- Some upperclass men would join processions of flagellents that would travel town to town#160;People wuld engage in public shows where they would some people would engage in public shows where they would punish themselves on stage to then move onto the next city. Punishments would include beating themselves or others with heavy leather strapsOther forms of punishment would include being cut with sharp pieces of metal,#160;this ritual was repeated 3 times a day for 33 and a ½ days before moving on to another town#160;
- What non-religious connections can you make between your subtopic and society?#160;Social distancing a isoulation was one of the best methods that help the plague die out#160;Over the next 5 years the black death was responsible for the passing of over 20 millionn people in Europe, almost ⅓ or Europe's population. The most common way the spread was slowed was by keeping arriving soldiers isolated, until they were sure they weren't infected with the plague. As well as isolating in homes when affectedSoldiers were held on their ship for 30 days andThis is were the origin the word quarantine originates which is still used today
