Storyboard Text

  • "A man stood upon a railroad bridge...rope closely encircled his neck."
  • "Circumstances...had prevented him from taking services with that gallant army..."
  • "One evening while Farquar and his wife were sitting on a rustic bench...a gray-clad soldier rode up to the gate and asked for a drink of water.
  • At the beginning of the story, this man, Farquhar, is being hanged. There were two private soldiers who were his executioners. Farquhar faces a conflict with himself and his executioners.
  • "...his wife... steps down from the veranda to meet him..."
  • Farquhar faces an internal and external conflict when he isn't able to join the military. Internal because something he has/hasn't done is keeping him from being able to join. External because the military isn't allowing him to join.
  • "As he is about to clasp her he feels a stunning blow upon the back of the neck..."
  • While Farquar and his wife were in the safety of their home, a sly federal scout rides upon them and leads Farquar to believe he needs to burn the bridge for the Confederate Army. This is a main conflict of the story because if the scout hadn't said this to Peyton Farquhar, he may not be hanged.
  • "...Farquar is dead; his body, with a broken neck, swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of the Owl Creek Bridge."
  • As Farquhar starts to reach home, which is the one thing he's waited for this whole time, he sees his wife. Farquhar has longed to get to see his wife and hold her so that he knows everything will be okay. (This is like his heaven)
  • Before he gets up to his wife to hug her, he is stuck dead in the neck.
  • It turns out that Farquhar didn't die from a gunshot to the neck--he had been dead all along. This whole story has been a figment of his imagination.
