  • The Pardoner's Tale began one morning in a drinking pub where three rioters are enjoying themselves with drinks and gambling. When suddenly, a corpse was carried by and a young servant has told them it was a friend of theirs and killed by somenone named Death. In anger, the three formed themselves allegiance into killing this culprit.
  • CLIMAX
  • As they go on a trip to find Death, a man so old that the earth refuses to take his body blocks their way. The three rudely asks for directions and after being threatened, the old man, in resentment, told them that he last saw Death under a tree around the nearby corner.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Upon arrival, they saw piles and piles of gold and decided to divide and bring all of it back to their homes, forgetting their plan of killing Death. Through draw of straws, the youngest among them pulled the shortest and was tasked to buy them food and wine as it was going to be a long night for them.
  • CONCLUSION
  • While the youngest went out for the errand, the two rioters conspires to kill him as soon as he comes back so the both of them could split the gold. Little did they know, the youngest also bought poison for their wine in planning to kill the two so he could have the gold all for himself.
  • As soon as the youngest got back, the two rioters went on with their plan and killed the youngest. However, thirst came upon the two and drank the poisoned wine that the youngest prepared for them.
  • In the end, they all died with their greed of keeping the gold at the expense of the life of the other just as how the Pardoner claims that greed is the root of all evil.
