  • Grendel Attacks Herot
  • He slipped through the door and there in the silenceSnatched up thirty men, smashed them (line 36-37)
  • The singing and joyful music drive me to murder!
  • Beowulf and his men sail to the land of the Danes
  • So Beowulf Chose the mightiest men he could find,The bravest and best of the Geats, fourteenIn all, and led them down to their boat; (line 119-123)
  • We must sail to the land of the Danes and save them!
  • Beowulf boasts of his feats
  • "I drove five great giants into chains!" (line 154)
  • Grendel is the epitome of darkness and evil in this section because he is compared to Cane from the biblical story Cane and Abel. He is in direct contrast with the joyful and happy mead hall which he attacks for 12 years!
  • Grendel arrives, hungry for flesh
  • He has eaten one of my men! I must kill him!
  • As an epic hero, Beowulf must sail across great lands and travel to a new land in order to save the day. After 12 years of Grendel's attacks, Beowulf and the Geats hear of the terror and set sail to save the day!
  • Beowulf Clings to Grendel's Arm
  • clutched at Beowulf with his claws, Grasped at a strong-hearted wakeful sleeper (line 269)
  • Beowulf has to establish himself as a great warrior! He is boasting of his many great feats to the Danes.
  • Grendel Dies
  • Grendel escaped,But wounded as he was could flee to his den,His miserable hole at the bottom of the marsh,Only to die, (line 342-354)
  • Grendel arrives at Herot hungry for more flesh! Beowulf watches as he eats on of his men! "HumanEyes were watching his evil steps,Waiting to see his swift hard claws.Grendel snatched at the first GeatHe came to, ripped him apart, cutHis body to bits with powerful jaws,Drank the blood from his veins and boltedHim down, hands and feet; death" (line 260-266)
  • When Grendel reaches for Beowulf to kill him, Beowulf grabs onto Grendel's arm and refuses to let him go. Grendel writhes in pain and thrashes about trying to escape Beowulf's grasp. Beowulf rips Grendel's arm from his body leaving him to slink back to his cave.
  • Grendel limps back to his cave and dies because of the injuries he sustained from Beowulf. "And yet his time had come, his days were over, his death near; downTo hell he would go" (line 328-330)
