  • As a Chinese Indonesian, celebrating Chinese New Year is a big thing for me.
  • Also known as the spring festival, Chinese New Year is held at the end of winter and the start of spring.
  • And what I am about to show you is some of the ways in which my family celebrates Chinese New Year...
  • In Chinese culture, the colour red symbolizes wealth, lucky, and prosperity, which is why most of the decorations and clothings used are red-coloured.
  • Chinese New Year is a time to visit family, bringing oranges as gifts to the eldelry. Oranges is believed to bring good luck and happiness and the gold- colour symbolizing prosperity. Meanwhile, unmarried people receives red envelopes containing money from married couples.
  • Fireworks are a must, as they are meant to scare away the evil spirits. And they're pretty too!
  • Similarly, the lion dance, with its loud accompaniment, also scares away evil...
  • And of course there is the food! There are lots and lots and lots of food constantly... it never ends.
  • Common dishes served at Chinese New Year are: dumplings, spring rolls, pork, fish, steamed bun, and most importantly, noodles (which means long and happy life).

  • There are twelve zodiac animals in the Chinese Calendar. This year is the year of the tiger.
