- Mr. White is playing chess with his son, Herbert, with his wife knitting contently by the fire. They are awaiting an odd visitor, an old friend who is a soldier whos had a wild journey.
- Climax
- Their strange visitor, the Sergeant-Major Morris, tells of his brave deeds and adventurous journeys. He shows a charm, a monkey's paw, and talks of it in a way of avoiding it and its mysterious wishes.
- Falling Action
- Mr. White is lighthearted about the paw and thinks none of it. Herbert and Mrs. White are joking about it while Morris is serious about the matter. Mr. White then thinks strangely of it when he holds it and wishes for 200 pounds and it moves by itself.
- Resolution
- Mr. and Mrs. White are talking about the paw and Mrs. White is secretly hoping the 200 pounds will appear. They then hear the devastating news of their son's death and the compensation was 200 pounds.
- Mr. and Mrs. White feel numb and that there's nothing to live for or be happy about. Until Mrs. White suggests that they make a second wish for Herbert to be alive again.After Mr. White wished, there were knocks.
- Mrs. White wanted to open the door for her son but Mr. White panicked and thought that it wouldn't actually be his son at the door. He grabbed the monkeys paw and wished for his son to not be alive.
