  • This two stanzas, free verse poem is narrated by a young man in love with a woman. It is possible to make this inference because his love is the daughter of old Alberto, that is, the speaker is not an old man. He admires the river as if it were the beauty of his beloved.

  • The man sees in the river the beauty of the love of his life, the daughter of old Alberto. The speaker's desire for her is very clear, as he praises her many times, and he understands that her heart is not hidden and is a representation of shine and beauty. The river is a metaphor for the perception of a woman's beauty.

  • Oh, my love! Thou art an emblem of the glow Of beauty.
  • The imagery of the poem is bright, clear, using the visual for the reader to better understand. The river is very descriptive in the first two lines and said: "Fair river! in thy bright, clear flow", " Of crystal, wandering water", helping even more to have that notion that the author wants to pass of its beauty.
  • To the River is an informal language figurative poem and it has rimes. It has simile "for in my heart as in thy stream; her image deeply lies" comparing his heart to a stream. " Of her soul-searching eyes." in the last line refers to Hyperbole as it is a fancy statement for the purpose of emphasis. Assonance "beautiful river in thy light", Alliteration "wandering water".
  • The effect that the poem causes is an admiration even melancholic. The feeling of love, desire, the desire to be with the person is very strong, and the description made by the speaker is something beautiful and pure.
