Storyboard Text

  • Speed
  • I wonder how fast I'm going
  • Average Speed
  • You know, our average speed is 1.3 kilometers per minute.
  • Instantaneous Speed
  • Yeah, for sure
  • Hey, could we slow down? I need a break.
  • Parker is running a local 5k with his friend Lily. Parker runs the 5k in 32 minutes and 25 seconds for a speed of 9.2545 kilometers per hour. Lily runs the 5k in 34 minutes and 12 seconds for a speed of 8.77 kilometers per hour. You can find speed by dividing the distance traveled by the time it took to get there.
  • Graphing Speed
  • rise/runy2 - y1 / x2 - x1
  • || .| .| . |____________
  • Time is on the x axis and distance is on the y axis.
  • Juan and Sam are driving a total of 80 km in his car and it takes them 60 minutes to get there. For 20 mins, Juan drives at a constant speed, then he stops for 15 mins. For the next 25 mins, he continues at a slower pace than before. Juan's speed changed multiple times, so we can use the formula "total distance / total time" to find his average speed. His average speed is 1.3 km/minute.
  • Velocity
  • Do you want to keep heading east?
  • Michael and Liam are going for a bike ride. At first, they ride at a speed of 7 m/s. They get tired after a few minutes and ride at a speed of 4 m/s. They ended their bike ride at a speed of 9 m/s. 7 m/s, 4 m/s, and 9 m/s are all examples of Michael and Liam's instantaneous speed. Instantaneous speed is the speed of an object at one instant. Instantaneous speed is happening right now.
  • Acceleration
  • Mr. Miller is teaching his class how to graph speed. You can graph speed. Time is the independent variable, so it goes on the x axis. Distance is the dependent variable, so it goes on the y axis. The slope of the graph represents the speed of the object. The formula for slope is rise / run or y2 - y1 / x2 - x1.
  • Eugene and Bertha are walking their dog, Cecil. They walk about 2000 meters in 20 minutes. The three of them walk at a pace of 1.67 meters per second. Bertha, Eugene, and Cecil walk east, so their velocity is 1.67 m/s in an eastward direction. Velocity is speed in a direction. Velocity can change when the speed, direction, or both change.
  • Arthur speed-walks to work at a pace of 2 meters per second for 5 seconds to the left, then he stops to talk to his boss, Mr. Clark for 15 seconds. During this time, he slows to a pace of 0 meters per second to the left. Arthur's walk to the office lasted a total of 20 seconds. The formula for acceleration is "final velocity - initial velocity / time". Arthur's acceleration can be found by doing "0 m/s - 2 m/s / 20 s". Arthur's acceleration is -0.1 m/s^2.
  • Good morning Mr. Clark! Just heading into the office.
