- Your child has CF or Cystic Fibrosis
- What is that?
- Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that is caused by a gene from you or your childs Father.
- It works by making your mucus thick and sticky, when it should be thin and slippery, clogging up organs
- This does mean that both of you have one CF gene in you, but this will not affect your health.
- No. You have to be born with two CF genes for CF to affect you, one from the Mother and one from the Father.
- If Cystic Fibrosis is in your genetics, does that mean that I have it too?
- There is currently no cure to CF, but the gene that causes CF has been identified and new research that focus on ways to repair or replace the gene are likely.
- Is there anything we can do to cure it?
- Bronchodilators relax muscles surrounding airways. With these medications, most people with CF live until their 30s or 40s!
- There are a few. Antibiotics help with the viruses caused by CF and Mucus thinners are an inhaled medication that makes mucus easier to cough up.
- What about treatments?
