Storyboard Text

  • The opening scene of the play, watchman Barnado is keeping watch when Marcellus and Hamlet's friend, Horatio arrive. They speak of this "thing" that as appeared before, and soon after Horatio asks if they have seen it again, they see said thing, a ghost appearing as the king.
  • "What, has this thing appear'd again to-night?"
  • Indeed my lord, it follow'd hard upon.
  • Hamlet's father, the king, had recently passed away. Horatio is greeting Hamlet, explaining the reason for his being there, but Hamlet disagrees and says he believes Horatio is there for his mother's wedding. Hamlet is upset, as his mother is marrying his uncle only 2 months after the passing of his father, as Horatio says it follow'd hard upon the king's death.
  • My lord, I came to see your father's funeral.
  • I prithee, do not mock me, fellow student. I think it was to see my mother's wedding.
  • In Polonius' house..
  • After Laertes' leaves, Polonius ask's his daughter Opehlia what her brother had spoken to her about. She tells him it was regarding her relationship with Hamlet, and her father again lectures her and demands to know what is happening between them. She explains how great his affection toward her has been, and Polonius continues to lecture Ophelia.
  • He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders Of his affection to me.
  • "So please you, something touching the lord Hamlet."
  • "What is't Ophelia, he hath said to you?"
  • "What is it between you? give me up the truth."
