  • Dramatic Irony
  • This represents dramatic Irony since we know something that Fortunato doesn't know. When Montresor says, "And I to your long life." Montresor and the reader both know that he means it sarcastically as his plan is to kill Fortunato in the catacombs as vengeance and Fortunato will not live "a long life".
  • “I drink,” he said, “to the buried that repose around us.”
  • “And I to your long life.”
  • Verbal Irony
  • This represents verbal irony since Montresor is telling Fortunato to leave because of his cough. This is ironic because Montresor has no intention to let Fortunato leave so he says the exact opposite of what he means and Fortunato insists that he is fine and is drawn to the Medoc.
  • "The drops of moisture trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back ere it is too late. Your cough ——”
  • “It is nothing,” he said; “let us go on. But first, another draught of the Medoc.”
  • Situational Irony
  • This represents situational irony since Fortunato's name is the opposite of what he is. Fortunato means to be fortunate and Fortunato is anything but fortunate, being driven into a catacomb to get a cask of amontillado and having terrible luck by getting trapped by Montresor.
  • What's your name again, ah, Fortunato. Very Fortunato indeed!
  • Someone help me get out!
