- Act Scene 1: Duke Orsino uses the spectacle of music to nourish his unrequited romance with Lady Olivia
- "If music be the food of love, play on"
- "Who governs here?"
- Act 1 Scene 2: Viola is now introduced to the characters of Orsino and Olivia
- "What is his name?"
- "Orsino. I have heard my father name him.He was a bachelor then."
- And so is now, or was so very late.For but a month ago I went from hence,And then ’twas fresh in murmur—as, you know,What great ones do the less will prattle of—That he did seek the love of fair Olivia.
- "Orsino"
- "A noble duke, in natureAs in name."
- "By my troth, I would not undertake her in this company. Is that the meaning of “accost”?"
- Act 1 Scene 3: Sir Andrew and Sir Toby trouble Olivia's maid, Maria with inappropriate comments.
- "You mistake, knight. “Accost” is front her, board her, woo her, assail her."
- "Fare you well, gentlemen."
- Act 1 Scene 4: Lord Valentine tells Viola (Cesario) that it was unnatural for Duke Orsino to have a liking for a servant especially in just three days. This makes Viola (Cesario) flushed as she in fact is attracted to the duke. She tries to hide her surprise by telling Lord Valentine that she might mess up soon and the duke's view of her will soon change.
- "You either fear his humor or my negligence, that you call in question the continuance of his love. Is he inconstant, sir, in his favors?"
- "If the duke continue these favors towards you, Cesario, you are like to be much advanced. He hath known you but three days, and already you are no stranger."
