- Climax
- The setting takes place in a subway in New York City during the 1970's, around the time when Jim Crow Laws and discrimination in the nation was prevalent.
- Falling Action
- Exposition
- Four boys are riding between the cars dangerously. Their names are Alfred, Tom, Calvin, and Samuel. The others on the train begin to be frustrated with the boys' recklessness. “...don’t like them to jiggle or jump but don’t want to interfere”(105).
- Rising Action
- Resolution
- A spiteful man ashamed of his boring childhood pulled the emergency cord which causes Samuel to fall to his gruesome death
- The policeman tell the mother that her son died and she cried and mourned for a long time. Samuels mother "screamed all day and moaned all night." (197).
- Samuel's mother and her husband eventually have another baby, but she understands that the new boy cannot replace her son. "never again will a boy exactly like Samuel be known." (198).
