- The decision to escape meant the risk of death but an opportunity to freedom. The enslaved frequently experienced fear, keeping themselves in plantations.
- I'm determined to escape!
- Punishments for escaped slaves included being whipped, raped, and murdered. Individuals who guided the fugitives were charged and punished as well.
- Terminology like "stations, depots, and safe houses" were used during this secretive operation to freedom. These hiding places were frequently private homes, churches or underground shelters.
- This is uncomfortable!
- Songs, chants and gestures were creative symbols conductors used to convey messages to the fugitive hiding in nearby locations.
- Chants of danger!
- When in safety, conductors guided the slaves to the Underground Railroad. The secret routes extended to 14 Northern states and Canada. Canada was the primary destination for the slaves.
