- The author, Gerald Malcom Durrell, describes the Rose-Beetle Man. He was playing a tune on a shepherd's pipe, he had a foxlike face and large eyes and was wearing a fantastic dress.
- Rising Action 3
- When the Rose-Beetle Man saw the author and his pet dog, Roger, he stopped greeted them and asked him if they had been to some fiesta. After a small conversation he removed half a dozen of tortoises.
- Climax 1
- Fascinated, the author watched them and one of them particularly appealed to him. It was was a size of a tea -cup and it seemed sprightlier than the others. He bargained with the Rose-Beetle Man and told him to collect the money from the villa.
- Climax 2
- Excited the author took his new pet home and quickly showed it to everyone. He named it "Achilles." Achilles loved grapes as much as Roger did, so there was always rivalry there. Roger enviously watched Achilles eat grapes as his mouth drooled saliva.
- One very unfortunate day, the garden gate was left open and Achilles was missing! They immediately formed searching groups and the family wandered around calling his name.
- After a long search they found him. He was dead!He had fallen into a well, the wall of which had disintegrated a long time ago.
