- The Battle with Grendel King Hrothgar, the ruler of the Danes, is troubled by the rampages of a demon named Grendel.
- Beowulf wrestles the demon into submission and eventually tears off his arm at the shoulder. Mortally wounded, Grendel flees into the wilderness and dies.
- Beowulf is finally able to wrench Grendel's arm out of its socket at the shoulder. This mortally wounds Grendel, and he runs off to die.
- The Battle with Grendel’s MotherBeowulf strikes Grendel's mother with the sword slicing her in two and splitting her collarbones The conflict symbolizes the struggle between good and evil
- After the attack, a light illuminates the cave, just as from the sky heaven's candle shines clear
