Assassination Of Archduke Ferdinand

World War One

Leading up to World War One many countries were trying to gain more power by obtaining more land. New land could help bring in more resources and more wealth. Africa and Asia were big targets of Imperialism because of the known resources they had. This competition led to high tensions between different countries and alliances.

Militarism is the process of a massive build up of a military. Before WWI Germany and Great Britain had a competition trying to have the largest navy in the world. They also both started creating new weapons like submarines and poison gas. This made other countries uneasy due to their focus on military and dangerous weapons.

Nationalism before WWI meant different things to different countries. Some examples of nationalism before WWI were unifying countries and other countries wanted to break-off and be their own country. Ultimately each country just wanted to show that their power and dominance.

Before WWI Germany and Austria-Hungary created the Alliance System. This was a system where different countries would pledge to aid the other if they were attacked and they promised to stay neutral if either of them were attacked by a European power. This system was picked up by other countries causing the two main sides of WWI.

On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary soon after declared war on Serbia. This brought in different countries into the conflict which ultimately lead to the start of World War One.

These 5 main causes lead to a 4 year war between the Allied and Central Powers. In the end 8.5 million people died and the Allies ended up winning the war.
